Golf floor under repair: What does this mean and what should I do?

Geschrieben von: Christoph Knapp | |

The most important points in brief

There are areas on every golf course that are temporarily off limits. These are called areas under repair. Such areas are created, for example, by maintenance work, weather damage or course alterations. They are marked with lines, posts or stakes - and require players to behave in accordance with the rules. In this article, you will find out exactly what ground in repair means, how you can get relief and what rules apply.

What does "ground under repair" mean in golf?

The term describes an area on the course that is in a condition that would hinder play or damage the golf course if entered or played on. The game management declares such areas to be "Ground Under Repair" (GUR).

These zones are usually marked by

  • White lines on the ground
  • Blue posts or stakes
  • Notes on the scorecard or by starters

According to the Rules of Golf, a ball that comes to rest in such an area may be played without penalty - provided the player follows the correct procedure.

When may (or must) I take relief?

If the ball lies in an area marked as an area under repair or if your stance or swing is affected by it, you may take relief. This means

  • Find the nearest point of complete relief
  • Drop the ball within one club length - no closer to the flag
  • Continue the game from there

Important: In some cases, the course rules even stipulate that you are not allowed to play from this area - in which case the relief is mandatory.

An example from practice

You play your round and the ball comes to rest on a sanded area marked with white lines. Following the instructions on the tee, you recognize: This is an area with ground in repair.

You may pick up the ball, determine the nearest free spot and drop it within one club length without penalty. This not only prevents you from breaking the rules, but also protects the course maintenance.

Attention pays off

Ground in repair Golf is an important part of the rules of golf that protects both the fairness of the game and the condition of the golf course. Anyone who recognizes the markings, takes correct relief and adheres to the course rules is playing responsibly and in accordance with the rules.

Tip: Familiarize yourself with the current course information before the round. Pay attention to markings and discuss unclear situations with your fellow players.

This will ensure that every round is not only fair, but also relaxed and compliant.
