Golf club types

Geschrieben von: Christoph Knapp | |

Golf is not only a very intensive sport, but also demands a great deal of mental strength and knowledge from its followers in addition to time and sporting activity. A golfer not only has to be fit to succeed, but also has to make many small and large technical decisions. These include choosing the right golf ball, observing the rules and etiquette and deciding on the right golf club and the right golf swing. When it comes to choosing the right club, we would like to introduce you to the individual types of golf club.

Amateur tip: This is a closed book, especially for amateurs. But don't let it take the fun out of golf. After all, all sports are notoriously difficult to start with. Our advice for beginners in particular is not to let a lot of questions about technique and equipment get in the way of your first attempts on the course. Take in the information, but concentrate on the execution of your golf swing. No type of golf club can improve your swing - quite the opposite. So always deal with technique first: Which shot do I master best? Which club can I use to execute the next shot safely? In the next step, your golf instructor will then train all types of golf clubs with you. Be patient here too - it's worth it!

The driver

The driver is the most popular type of golf club. It can be used to cover the longest distances. But of course only if you have already mastered the golf swing. The driver is also the longest and therefore the most difficult golf club. Although it looks very heavy, it is usually the lightest. This is of course due to the material of the entire club. In addition to these special features, there is another: the driver is always played in combination with a tee. This type of golf club is therefore only suitable for the golf tee. No golfer should be without a driver - but you should learn to master it particularly well.

The woods

They are very similar in appearance to the driver. The difference is that they are slightly smaller and can therefore be played without a tee. They are therefore mostly used on the fairway when long distances need to be covered. Commonly used for these types of golf clubs are the 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, where the number indicates how far a shot can be hit. The lower the number, the larger the club head. This means that smaller numbers can be used to cover longer distances. The most common sizes of these golf club types are the 3, 5 and 7. (Why the clubs are called woods is due to the nature of the material used in the past. The club heads used to be made of wood)

The irons

Irons are used for medium distances. These are among the most versatile of all golf club types. There are the following types of irons: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. This number is always engraved on the head. The number indicates: The smaller the number, the smaller the angle of inclination of the clubface (loft). The shaft is also longer. This influences the hitting distance to the extent that further distances can be covered.

The hybrid clubs

This type of golf club is a combination of woods and irons. It is also called a rescue and is mainly used in the semi-rough or on the fairway. These types of golf clubs are not played quite as often as irons or woods, as many golfers cannot really see the benefits. The advantage is said to lie in the fact that long shots can be hit with a high degree of accuracy.

The pitching wedge

After the 9 iron, it is then the turn of the pitching wedge. With a high loft and short shaft, these types of golf clubs are used for approach shots. As already mentioned with the irons, the ball does not fly far, but nevertheless high - this makes it possible to perform a fairly precise golf shot.

The sand wedge

The sand wedge is used for even more difficult and precise shots. These are also used for shots from the bunker. These golf clubs are grouped in ascending order after the 9-iron and the pitching wedge.

The lob wedge

The final stage of the precise golf shot is the lob wedge. Here, too, it is shorter and higher, with very precise ball control.

The putter

Last but not least, we must not forget the most important of the golf club types - the putter. Up to this point, we have overcome all distances and obstacles from the tee to the green with all the golf clubs listed - now only a few meters to centimetres separate us from the desired goal: the golf hole. The putter is now pulled out for maximum precision when playing golf. This is also available in all shapes and sizes. We can only advise you to choose the putter that suits you best and that you feel comfortable with. So invest a little more time in choosing your putter and ask your golf instructor or store to give you several models to try out.

The golf club set

But you can't just buy individual clubs. Many manufacturers offer the most common types in so-called sets. The big advantage here is of course the price. Beginners in particular are better off buying a set than buying the golf club types individually. In most cases, a golf bag is also included in the package. This means that amateurs can get started straight away without having to worry too much about the initial equipment. Of course, the sets can be purchased as both left-handed and right-handed sets. There are of course also sets and packages for advanced players. In addition to the manufacturers themselves, golf instructors or golf stores can also help you here.
