4 types of club you should know
Choosing the right club is always key, as it has a decisive influence on your swing and the resulting trajectory of the golf ball. So first ask yourself what kind of golf club you actually need.

Putter
The putter is one of the most important golf clubs in every player's golf bag. The putter is the club for holing the ball on the green and therefore has a decisive influence on your score, that is, the final number of strokes on a hole. With a putter, too, it is very important that it has the right dimensions and properties. Above all, the right length is crucial for a successful putting stroke. We offer all the top putter brands and, of course, a putter fitting tailored to you:
- Kramski putters
- Nickel putters
- Ping
- Scotty Cameron
- Odyssey
- Mizuno odyssey
- Wilson Staff

Driver
The driver is designed for long shots from the tee of a golf hole.
This club is probably the most fun to hit and is now available in countless designs and versions.
New, lightweight materials give even players with a slower swing speed undreamt-of distance, just as top golfers can achieve ever greater lengths.
Take advantage of these material developments too and treat yourself to a new wood.

Hybrid clubs
Hybrids, also known as rescue clubs, are a cross between irons and fairway woods. They combine the long distance of fairway woods with the precision of irons.
This makes hybrids a great all-round tool, but they are also ideal for shots from the semi-rough, where fairway woods are too difficult to play and irons cannot achieve the desired distance.

Fairway woods
With fairway woods you can cover long distances on the fairway.
Ideal for the second shot on a par 5 or a long par 4, but also for tee shots on long par 3s or on narrow fairways where teeing off with a driver is too risky.
Cast or forged: iron sets
Iron sets are available in cast or forged versions and are mainly intended for so-called transport shots or shots onto the green.
Here is a short overview.
- Long irons (2, 3, 4): these clubs are harder to hit and are used for long distances. Because they are difficult, they are often replaced by hybrid clubs, which are easier to hit.
- Mid irons (5, 6, 7): these clubs offer a balance between distance and precision and are often used for shots from the fairway or for approach shots.
- Short irons (8, 9): these clubs are used for precise approach shots, often onto the green, and produce a high trajectory that helps the ball stop quickly. These golf clubs have different loft angles, designed for high, short shots or low, long shots.
The pitching wedge in an iron set is intended for high approach shots onto the green and is available with different loft and bounce angles.
Buying golf clubs: use our buying guide
After all this important information, it is now time to find the right golf club. The following buying criteria will help you find the right club.
Keep an eye on your budget
One buying criterion when shopping online is price. Price tells you a lot about many factors, such as manufacturer, material or quality. But affordable does not mean cheap or poor. Of course there is generally a link between price and quality, but expensive golf clubs are not necessarily always the right or better clubs.
So if you are a beginner just finding your way into golf, you should always focus on the budget or mid-price segment. Especially suitable are the so-called complete sets from, for example, Tommy Armour, or mid-priced clubs from, for example, Precept, Mizuno or Cobra. Also look out for discontinued models, which can often be bought at sensational prices from Golf24.com.
An advanced player, on the other hand, who wants to improve their handicap with new "weapons", should definitely always start in the mid-price segment and possibly also look for a golf club in the higher price segment. Brands such as Callaway, Titleist, Ping or Nike are recommended here.
Fitting as the finishing touch
Once you have decided on a particular model, all you really need to do is test it and have the club adjusted to your measurements. Experience shows that a static fitting is sufficient for 90% of golfers. Many manufacturers already offer such a fitting on their websites, for example Ping on ping.com. With the data obtained, you can then easily order your golf clubs online by email.
We also recommend so-called demo days or fitting days: here you can test the equipment at your leisure and develop a feel for it and a liking for it.
For 10% of golfers, especially low handicappers, a so-called custom fitting is usually recommended. This takes into account not only body proportions and measurements but also the golf swing, swing speed, ball flight etc., using computer analysis, so that the new golf club is tailored down to the smallest detail.
This way, key questions can be answered:
- Graphite shaft or steel shaft
- Shaft flex
- Shaft length
- Lie and loft angle
- Low or high centre of gravity in the clubhead
- Grip size
Choosing the flex
Flex is the measure of how much a club's shaft bends and is crucial for a consistent, successful ball flight and for a game that is kind to your joints. The only deciding factor when choosing the shaft flex is the swing speed at which the clubhead strikes the ball. Today many different golf club flexes are on offer, for players with extremely slow swing speeds right up to very fast ones.
Unfortunately, shaft names vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. As a rule, however, the following flex options are offered:
- Ladies Light (LL): suitable for women and juniors with a slow swing speed of under 50 mph
- Ladies (L): suitable for women, men and seniors with a very low swing speed of under 60 mph
- Senior (S/M/A): suitable for stronger women or men with a medium swing speed of between 60 and 75 mph
- Regular (R): suitable for very athletic women and men with a "normal" swing speed of between 75 and 90 mph
- Stiff or Firm: suitable for athletic men and very good golfers with a very high club swing speed of between 90 and 100 mph
- Extra Stiff (XS): especially recommended for pros and players with an extremely high swing speed of 100 mph or more.
Tailoring the length
Manufacturers invest a great deal of money in developing and testing products. State-of-the-art golf robots constantly provide new insights, which of course also take into account the right shaft length for golf clubs. Here too, 90% of players are best served by a standard length. Only a few players need their shaft length adjusted. To find the right measurements, it is best to carry out a static web fitting or to have our experts measure you at a demo or fitting day.
The length of a club is usually only changed upwards, which means golf clubs are lengthened if necessary. Most golf companies recommend lengthening a club by no more than half an inch and making the lie more upright instead. We only recommend shortening clubs in exceptional cases, because this reduces the swing weight of the club so much that trajectory and distance would suffer too much. In addition, shortening a club usually makes the shaft flex far too stiff. A shortened R flex can quickly become a stiff or extra-stiff flex, which most players cannot play.
We also advise against retrofitting changes to a club shaft, as was done to golf clubs in the 1960s and 1970s and is still practised today. Rebuilding a club afterwards completely changes the individual components such as swing weight, flex, etc.
Setting the loft
The loft of a golf club describes the angle of the clubface, which, when the ball is struck correctly, is ultimately responsible for the height of the ball flight. With a low loft the ball flies lower, and with a higher loft it flies higher. Of course, the distance also depends mainly on the clubhead speed at the angle of impact.
For very good golfers, the loft is often adjusted again from the club's standard loft, mostly downwards, to achieve even better performance in terms of distance.
Lie, kick point and torque
The lie is the angle between the clubhead and the shaft. The lie needs to be adjusted especially for very short or very tall players and is therefore even more important than the shaft length. For a male golfer who is 175 cm tall, the lie should be approx. 2° flatter. For a height of 195 cm, approx. 4° steeper, or more upright.
The kick point of a golf club shaft is the point at which the shaft bends the most during the shot. A low kick point is closer to the clubhead, and the ball flies relatively high. A high kick point is near the grip, high up on the shaft, so golf balls tend to fly lower. A mid kick point is roughly in the middle of the shaft and produces a "normal" ball flight.
The so-called torque value of a golf club expresses the torsional stiffness of the shaft. The higher the torque value, the more the shaft twists at impact, and vice versa. High swing speeds therefore call for lower torque, otherwise precision is lost, while players with a slow swing speed need higher torque, otherwise distance is lost.
Choosing the grip size
Above all, the right grip thickness is important on a golf club. A grip that is too thick usually makes it harder to rotate the forearms and to hold the club securely. This usually results in a slice, or shots that drift to the right. With grips that are too thin, the balls tend to go left, and here too a secure hold is lost above all. Ideally, the grip should run between the palm and the fingers so that it can be held comfortably.
Why you should choose us: Golf24.com
We are aware that there are many suppliers in golf. Below we show you why we are confident that you will find the best offer with us.
Golf clubs of the highest quality
What does quality mean?
Of course, every customer has their own understanding of this term. So that we all mean the same thing by it, we would like to explain our understanding of quality:
- Quality in our choice of manufacturers: we don't want to flood you with golf products in our golf shop, but we do want to present you with a very large and, above all, good selection of manufacturers and products.
- Because we know that time is money these days, we pre-select for you the products that, in our view, are outstanding in terms of value for money.
- We not only value the good reputation of manufacturers but can also offer you high-quality unbranded items and golf clubs here in the shop.
- Quality in our choice of products: of course, once we have made a statement about the quality of the manufacturers, we can already say a lot about the quality of the product selection. Nevertheless, we make a further selection for you here: this means we don't automatically include every product from our manufacturers in our range.
- At the same time, we also need to offer you affordable alternatives to the expensive products. As a general rule, quality naturally varies with material and workmanship, and therefore usually with price.
- So think in advance about what you expect from the product, because you will experience quality when you are satisfied with the price and performance. If you buy a cheap club and it doesn't deliver the expected results, you will doubt the quality of that product or manufacturer.
- So the be-all and end-all of understanding quality is to define your expectations and then make the right product choice.
- That's why we select the right products and golf clubs for you ahead of each season and only include in our range those products that have successfully passed our quality checks beforehand.
Buy golf clubs online: quality at a fair price
Of course, it is difficult to find a suitable model online. But it is not impossible: often you already have a clear idea of the manufacturer or the product itself. That way you can not only order comfortably from home, but also take advantage of the cost benefits of an online golf shop. Golf24.com offers lots of information and ideas about golf, so let yourself be inspired.
We stock a number of club manufacturers. How about Callaway, Ping, Titleist or Nike, for example? We are also happy to offer you a suitable demo day, or why not ask about a personal club fitting? Our team will be happy to advise you by phone or email if you would like to order a suitable golf club online from Golf24.com. We have answers to all your questions about specification, length, grips or material.
