A golf iron set is available in either a cast or a forged version and is mainly intended for so-called transport shots or shots onto the green. These golf clubs have different loft angles, designed for high, short shots or low, long shots. The wedges in an iron set are intended for high approach shots onto the green and are available with different loft and bounce angles.

Best-selling golf iron sets
Of course, as in any other sport, there are certain brands that are not only popular but bought most often. In our online shop the following brands are the most popular and are therefore among our best sellers:
- Mizuno
- Titleist
- Taylor Made
- Precept
- Callaway
- Nike
- Cobra
- Ping
These brands have products at every price level in their ranges. It is also not always worth having the very latest model. Look specifically at the special offers and make a good catch in terms of value for money. Use the annual model updates in the golf iron set category to benefit yourself and your wallet.

How irons are constructed
An iron can be constructed in two ways: forged or cast. Which type you prefer is usually a question of price, and of course the forged iron is always the more expensive. So it's no surprise that cast golf irons increasingly dominate the golf market. Here again, value for money is the be-all and end-all.
In addition, forged iron sets are not always the right choice for amateur players. They should mainly be played by players with good shot consistency who want good feedback at impact. Cast irons don't convey this feeling quite as intensely, but are better suited to players who prefer a forgiving set of golf clubs.
The second question when choosing a golf iron set is the shaft: steel or graphite. Graphite is usually the first choice when it comes to speed and distance of ball flight. Graphite is also the first choice for most amateur golfers. Steel is preferred by players who have a very high swing speed and demand maximum feedback and performance from their equipment. The final combination of clubhead, club shape, shaft and grip will ultimately depend on the particular model and manufacturer, and on your individual needs.

The ideal golf iron set through club fitting
In our opinion, the best way to the perfect golf iron set is still club fitting. For 90% of golfers, a static fitting is sufficient, and around 90% of those in turn need completely normal standard iron sets.
Once you have chosen a suitable model, it still makes sense to have the clubs tailor-made for you. Many manufacturers already offer this online. We recommend, for example, the WebFit on www.ping.com. But you can also have the settings made at a demo day, or ask your golf pro to measure you.
A golf iron set can only be good if you can play properly with it. This usually only works when the clubs ideally match your proportions and your golf swing. Simply ask about a fitting when you get the chance and have the advantages explained and demonstrated on site.
Iron sets compared
Finally, we would like to present a few well-known brands and prices as a brief comparison. In the table, we have taken the most popular 2012 model from each manufacturer. The price range is approx. €550 to €1,000:

From the brief table shown here, you can quickly see that the brand or the name alone doesn't tell you how playable an iron set is. Here again, it helps to try things out and choose the clubs according to your personal feel. You can also see that iron sets, even from top manufacturers, don't have to be expensive at all!
