Why is it not allowed to wear shirts without a collar on the golf course, according to golf etiquette?
All polo shirts, shirts and other outerwear worn by men and women on the golf course must have a collar. According to the dress code, collars are compulsory on almost all golf courses worldwide. Even shirts from well-known golf manufacturers with "only" a stand-up collar are usually not welcome or not permitted. It is therefore advisable to wear a shirt with a collar and short or long sleeves when playing golf. Ladies' shirts may also be sleeveless, but tank tops are not permitted.
This dress code is mainly to do with the function of the clothing and the fact that in earlier years, traditionally no skin was shown on the golf courses. The quality and shape are usually better adapted to the golf movement and inappropriate parts of the body are better covered by the right golf clothing on the golf course, even during a dynamic golf swing. Even today, it is usually not appropriate and still inappropriate to show too much skin on the course.
In a synagogue, for example, all visitors must cover their skin for religious reasons. Incidentally, some sources also attribute the collar requirement to better protection from wind, sun and weather on the golf course. However, this assumption as to why a shirt should have a collar is not substantiated and is based purely on speculation.
