A golf match or golf tournament is always a competition at the same time. There are different types of golf competitions. A distinction must be made between two main variants. On the one hand, the counting game, in which a golfer ultimately only plays against himself and the golf course. The other is the hole competition, in which two players or two teams compete directly against each other. In amateur golf, the so-called counting game according to Stableford is the most frequently played golf competition. In professional golf, however, the pure counting game is preferred as the number one type of competition. In every golf club or on every golf course there are internal competitions and open competitions. Only club members are eligible to take part in an internal golf competition, while guests are also welcome to take part in an open golf competition. There is usually a registration fee or participation fee for taking part. Guests usually also have to pay a reduced green fee. Many competitions are sponsored by companies who want to use the golfing platform to present themselves or their product. In some cases, a golf competition can also be an invitation-only competition, i.e. only invited guests are entitled to participate. In principle, a golf competition played in the counting game mode can always be a handicap competition, but it does not have to be. The decision is made in advance by the organizer. A tournament played in the hole competition mode never has a handicap.
