A golf chip is an approach shot to the flag from the immediate vicinity of the green. In contrast to a pitch, the ball rolls most of the distance covered in a golf chip. The idea is to play the ball so strongly that it hits the edge of the green and then rolls the rest of the way along the green to the flag. The choice of club ultimately depends on the flight and roll ratio of the golf ball. If the ball does not have to fly very far and has plenty of room to roll out, a longer club is used. In contrast, a club with more loft is used if the ball has little green to roll and has to come to rest quickly. In terms of movement, the golf chip is very similar to the putt. A so-called single lever movement of the arms is sufficient to give the ball the desired speed.
