Golf tee-up is the term used to describe the teeing up of the ball. On the tee of a golf hole, a ball may generally be placed on a tee, but a tee does not have to be used for teeing off. A golfer may just as well simply place his ball on the grass or form a mound on the tee, which the player uses as a so-called natural tee. It is important to choose the right tee height for the golf tee-up. As a guide, the tee height for irons should be high enough to fit a finger's width between the ball and the ground. With woods, the equator of the golf ball should be flush with the upper edge of the club head. Half of the ball must therefore protrude over the club head. Too low a tee height on woods can lead to flat and poorly hit golf shots. A golf tee-up that is too high, on the other hand, can lead to a so-called candle. This means that the ball is under-hit, goes very high, does not go far and usually leaves an unsightly scratch on the club surface.
