On May14 , 1754, the "Society of St. Andrews Golfers" was founded in St. Andrews, Scotland. At the time, the course had 22 holes on which 22 gentlemen competed for a silver club. The first winner was William Landale, a merchant from St. Andrews. In 1764, the course was reduced to eighteen holes. In 1754, St. Andrews adopted the 13 rules laid down ten years earlier by the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. The rules and decisions, most of which are still valid today, originated from this basic set of rules. This was then officially adopted by all golf clubs and associations in 1897. In 1834, King William IV granted permission to use the name Royal and so the Royal and Ancient Golf Club was founded. The clubhouse, which is still famous today, was built and opened in 1854. Today the golf club has 1750 members. 700 of these come or come from 50 different countries.
