The term for the longitudinal stiffness, or the degree of stiffening of a shaft, is called golf flex. The golf flex should be higher than the swing speed generated by the golfer. Many golfers play with shafts that are too hard. It is therefore very important to adapt the golf flex individually to each player and their swing speed. Different types of flex are available to golfers. As a rule, the softest shafts are labeled "L" for ladies, followed by "A" for all-round, "R" for regular, "S" for stiff and "X" for extra stiff. An L flex is recommended for swing speeds under 55 mph. Mph stands for miles per hour. An A flex is recommended for a swing speed of 55 to 70 mph, an R flex for a speed of 70 to 85 mph, an S flex for 85 to 100 mph and an X flex is recommended for golfers with swing speeds of more than 100 mph.
