An official handicap originally started at a handicap of -28. This is still the case today in some countries, but in Germany, for example, a handicap of -36 has been the entry level for the handicap league for many years. Furthermore, until some time ago there was only the so-called Platzreife, which allowed members to play on their home course without a handicap. In the meantime, however, the so-called golf club handicap has been introduced in addition to the course handicap and the official handicaps. This ranges from handicap -37 to handicap -54 and is intended to introduce beginners to the handicap system more carefully than before. Achieving the still existing course handicap is now equivalent to a handicap of -54, which, provided you are a member of the association, entitles you to participate in tournaments in handicap class 5.
