The golf tee

Geschrieben von: Christoph Knapp | |

What does the term "golf tee-up" mean?

This golfing term refers to the raising of the golf ball. This is achieved by the so-called tee. The aim of this process is to make it easier for the golfer to hit the ball. With large woods and drivers in particular, it is almost impossible to hit the golf balls from the ground without a tee. Of course, you also want to achieve a greater hitting distance. But for beginners in particular, hitting and practicing from a tee, even with irons, is a relief.

General rules for teeing up

A golfer may always place the ball on the golf tee at the tee of a golf hole. The golf ball may, but does not have to, be placed on a tee. Golf tees are available in different lengths and designs. New ideas are constantly coming onto the market which promise the golfer advantages when hitting the golf ball. Teas are usually made of wood or plastic. The height at which a golf ball is teed up depends on the choice and size of the golf club. The basic rule is: when teeing off with an iron, the ball should be teed up slightly wider than a finger. If a golfer plays his tee shot with a wood, the golf ball should be placed on the golf tee so that about half of the golf ball protrudes beyond the club head. In other words, the equator of the golf ball should be flush with the upper edge of the club head. If you want to give the ball a flatter trajectory, the ball is teed up lower. If the golf ball is teed up higher, there is a risk of under-hitting the ball. This can result in a so-called candle.

Practice the advantages of the tee on the range and use them on the course:

Especially as a beginner, take advantage of the tee on every tee shot and practice shots with irons on the range. As you have already read, it is also important to get a feel for the right tee length. Deliberately provoke different tee situations to learn for the course. Special tees with markings also help you to standardize your tee shots and the correct height.
