The golf downswing

Geschrieben von: Christoph Knapp | |

Golf downswing : An important part of the golf swing Theoretical definition of the term: "The golf downswing is the phase from the highest point of the backswing back to the moment of impact of the ball." Practical implementation: In golf, the downswing is a very difficult and complicated process that develops from a dynamic movement. The aim of the downswing is to propel the golf ball towards the hole or the target. This is easier for some and more difficult for others. This is where it becomes clear whether and how correct the golf swing is.

Frequently asked questions about the golf swing

The most frequently asked questions from our golf students revolve around the golf downswing. We would like to present the most important questions here: 1. how is the downswing performed correctly? When you want to initiate the downswing, there is a lateral weight shift of the hips with a simultaneous downward movement of the arms. 2 How fast should the downswing be? Basically, the faster the swing, the further the golf ball flies. However, this always assumes that the ball is hit correctly. The faster the movement, the more difficult it is to control the impact torque factors. Important: The subjectively faster part of the swing should take place after the moment of impact, i.e. make the golf downswing slower and then accelerate the arm movement towards the target and into the finish. 3. does the downswing have to be on the right plane? The better the club (whether driver, hybrid or single iron) and the arms move on the plane of the club or swing, the more economical the entire golf swing and downswing will be. However, ultimately "only" the moment of impact counts. If all the important factors are fulfilled at this point, it does not matter whether the downswing was on the correct plane beforehand. 4. should there be a pause between the backswing and the downswing? Absolutely not! The transition should be smooth. Ideally, the lower body should already be moving back towards the target while the arms and shoulders are still turning up. A kind of whip movement is important here. During training, however, it can also make sense to train with a longer or shorter pause before the golf downswing in order to achieve the optimum starting effect. 5. does the downswing change due to a longer club? No, even if the club is longer, the golf downswing should not change. The lie of the club does change the posture and therefore the plane, but the player should still try to maintain his movement. Even if, of course, a longer shaft makes the swing movement more difficult. This is why amateur golfers usually prefer to play with irons instead of fairway woods or are increasingly turning to so-called hybrids in order to achieve longer shots more easily.
