This type of competition is a counting game in which the player plays as many strokes as he is entitled to according to the sum of his handicap and the respective course standard. If a player has a handicap of 28 and is playing on a par 72 course, he must finish the round after 100 strokes.
The flag competition is over when he has reached this number of strokes. This is often the case in the middle of the golf course. This point is then marked with a flag. If the strokes have not yet been used up on the 18th hole, the player continues to play on hole 1 until all the clubs have been used up and he or she can place their flag. The winner of the flag competition is the player whose flag is furthest forward.
