Why are you not allowed to wear sneakers?
According to the golf rules and the golf dress code, there is no penalty for playing golf with sneakers, but they are often prohibited on the golf course as they do not comply with golf etiquette. Likewise, jeans and shirts without collars are usually not permitted. The danger with some sneakers, especially running shoes, is also that they can damage the green, as the shoes often have a very irregular tread, which is not suitable for walking on a golf green. For this reason, caddies on the professional tour must always wear smooth-soled sneakers, similar to tennis shoes for indoor or clay courts, in accordance with the golf dress code.
Proper golf shoes offer a much more stable and better stance during the golf swing than conventional sports shoes. Due to the strong rotational movements, a stable stance is extremely important in order to hit the golf ball cleanly and regularly. The spikes on the shoes also ensure even better grip when teeing off and on all long golf shots. Incidentally, these spikes used to be made of metal, but nowadays only soft spikes are generally used. These are much more gentle on the course, but above all on the feet on hard surfaces, than the metal spikes used in the past.
