The Volvo World Match Play is one of the top golf tournaments in Europe. With a new sponsor, the World Match Play Championship will continue on an invitational basis and will now be held in Spain. Most recently, the World Match Play tournament was called the HSBC World Match Play Championship. The tournament was always held in mid-September at the Wentworth Club near London. The prize money of1 million £ was unique in Europe at the time. There were no tournaments in the list of top golf tournaments in Europe that paid out such a high winner's cheque until then.
