"The player and his caddy are responsible for ensuring that they are aware of the rules. During a set round the player shall incur the applicable penalty for any breach of the rules by his caddie."²
According to the official rules of golf, the golfer is therefore also responsible for ensuring that his caddy is aware of the rules of golf and is able to understand and apply them. If a caddy makes a mistake, the respective golf player is penalized with penalty strokes in the counting game or with a hole loss in the hole competition. On professional tours around the world, players usually have to pay very high fines for rules and etiquette mistakes made by their caddies. This includes, for example, an improperly raked bunker or playing too slowly.
