a) At rest
If a player's ball in motion after a stroke is deflected or stopped in play by a ball at rest, the player must play his ball as it lies. In hole play, this is not a penalty. In the counting game, this is without penalty unless both balls were on the green before the shot. In this case, the player incurs a penalty of two strokes.
b) On the move
If a player's golf ball in motion after a stroke is deflected or stopped by another ball in motion after a stroke, the player must play his ball as it lies. The case is penalty-free unless the player has violated Rule 16-1f and incurred the penalty for violation of that rule.
Exception: If the player's ball is in motion after a shot played on the green and the other ball is in motion, the ball is not in play - see Rule 19-1b.
PENALTY FOR BREACH OF THE RULES:
Hole play - Hole loss; Counting play - Two strokes.
