"The golf ball played by the player must comply with the specifications required in Appendix III.
Note: In the competition rules (Rule 33-1), the match committee may stipulate that the ball played by the player must be listed in the R&A's current list of approved golf balls."²
As you can see, there are strict specifications in the official golf rules as to which golf balls may be used in a competition. So-called x-out balls, for example, are not permitted as golf balls in a tournament. The effect of the quality of a ball on the game of golf is often underestimated, especially by amateurs with medium and high handicaps.
