Due to the weather, it is difficult to play golf in many regions in Central and Northern Europe during the winter months. A green should not be played on or walked on in frost and frozen ground, as this would destroy the grass structure. In addition, many courses use the quiet winter months to give the greens a chance to rest and recover. In order to give interested players the opportunity to play, the greenkeepers install so-called golf winter greens on site. A golf winter green is ultimately nothing more than a slightly shorter mown area on the fairway with a hole insert and a flag that is placed just before the real green. Some courses not only lay out such golf winter greens, but also winter tees according to the same principle. However, there are also many courses which, despite the cold weather, keep the course open as long as there is no snow.
