If two or more players have the same result on the scorecard at the end of a competition, then either additional holes are played until the winner can be determined or holes previously specified in the announcement are used for scoring. This is usually the case in the so-called net scoring of a tournament. A so-called golf play-off is played to decide the gross winner in the amateur sector and always to decide the winner in professional sport. This usually takes the form of sudden death, i.e. it is played until one player has achieved a better score than the other on a hole. At the US Open, in the event of a tie after 4 rounds, a complete, further eighteen-hole round is played the next day. In most other cases, the decision is made immediately after the competition on the same day.
