When overplaying a handicap in a tournament, there is an area in which the golfer's handicap does not deteriorate despite overplaying. This golf protection area is divided into the different handicap classes as follows. In handicap class 1 (up to -4.4) you have 1 stroke buffer, in handicap class 2 (-4.5 to -11.4) you have 2 strokes buffer, in handicap class 3 (-11.5 to -18.4) you have 3 strokes buffer, in handicap class 4 (-18.5 to -26.4) you have 4 strokes buffer and in handicap class 5 (-26.5 to -36.0) you even have 5 strokes buffer. If you do not reach these golf handicap ranges, your handicap is increased by 0.1 points. From handicap -36 to -54 you can no longer worsen your handicap.
