A golf shaft is the connecting piece between the grip and the club head of a golf club. Until the late twenties of the 19th century, golf shafts were made from hickory wood without exception. Due to the long fibers of this wood, the clubs were particularly durable and flexible. Later, the steel shaft became more and more popular, which is still preferred by most professionals today. The success of the various plastic shafts then began in the 1980s. Nowadays, these are mostly made of graphite. It is not only the overall flexibility that is important for the quality of a golf shaft. The so-called torque, i.e. the torsion of the shaft around its longitudinal axis, also plays a role, as does the particularly flexible part of the golf shaft, which can be moved up or down depending on requirements or personal preference.
