What is a handicap in golf?
The handicap describes the estimated number of additional strokes a golfer needs to play the course on a standard golf course compared to a so-called scratch golfer (handicap 0). The handicap system serves as a comparative value between players of different skill levels.
Unlike many other sports, golf allows players of different abilities to compete fairly against each other - this is what makes the handicap so important for golf.
The handicap index as a basis
The Handicap Index is the central value in the new World Handicap System (WHS). It is based on the best results from your last 20 handicap-relevant rounds - whether EDS rounds, tournaments or official private rounds.
The index is calculated on the basis of the slope value, the course rating and the holes played. In combination with the respective course profile, the index results in your course handicap - i.e. the playing handicap valid on this specific golf course.
The golf handicap classes in Germany
In Germany, the handicap classes are based on a classification of the German Golf Association (DGV). They are primarily used to classify and regulate which rounds are handicap-relevant:

Handicap calculation and course handicap
The handicap calculation in the WHS is dynamic. At the center is the handicap index, which is updated by the scoring records. Not all rounds count - only the best 8 of the last 20. These are included in the average and thus determine the current value.
The course handicap is calculated using the following formula:
Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Value / 113) + (Course Rating - Par)
Depending on the golf course, a golfer with a handicap index of 12.5 can have a course handicap of 14 or 11, for example - depending on the difficulty of the course.
Handicap-relevant rounds and scoring record
Certain rules must be fulfilled for a round to be handicap-relevant:
- Played on an authorized course
- Under Stableford points scoring
- Officially registered (e.g. as an EDS round or tournament)
- Played according to the rules of the golf association
- Round with confirmed result (e.g. by counter)
All scored results are included in the personal scoring record, which is managed centrally via the golf club or the national association system (e.g. DGV in Germany).
Handicap relevance and extra day score
Rounds can also be scored outside of tournaments - e.g. through Extra Day Scores (EDS). These allow golfers to improve their handicaps in private rounds or outside of official events. The prerequisite is that the round is registered correctly and played in accordance with the applicable handicap rules.
This is an important tool for monitoring progress, especially for beginners and players who play regularly but rarely play tournaments.
Example: How your handicap changes
A golfer with a handicap index of 18.2 plays on a course with a slope of 128, a course rating of 71.5 and a par of 72:
Course handicap = 18.2 × (128 / 113) + (71.5 - 72) = 20.1
If he scores 39 Stableford points in the tournament, his score is above the target - his index is recalculated and may drop slightly.
From handicap 54 to handicap zero - development & target setting
The goal of many golfers is to reduce their handicap - from hcp 54 as a starting point to hcp 18, hcp 9 or even handicap zero. This is not just about sporting ambition, but also about understanding your own playing potential, the importance of technique and tactics and knowledge of course strategy.
