If a ball lies on the green and is putted, hitting the flag would result in a penalty stroke. For this reason, the flag is usually removed from the hole before the shot. However, it often happens that you cannot see the hole with long putts. In this case, ask a fellow player to use the flag. When using the golf flag, the teammate holds the flag in the hole so that the player can see it. When the ball rolls towards the hole, the teammate removes the flag to prevent the golf ball from hitting the flagstick. The flag may also be used for balls that lie outside the green, although hitting the flag would not result in a penalty stroke.
