The golf bunker is not a shelter, but an obstacle on the fairway or around the green. It is filled with sand and is intended to make the game more difficult. According to the rules of golf, the bunker is an obstacle in which the golf club may not be placed on the sand before the shot. This would result in a penalty stroke. Likewise, natural objects may not be removed from the golf bunker. The golf bunkers that are located far away from the green on the fairway or next to the fairway are called fairway bunkers. The golf bunkers near the green or directly on the green are called green bunkers. The rules remain the same in both golf bunkerst, although a sand wedge is usually chosen when hitting from the green bunker, but longer irons or even hybrids or woods are also used when hitting from the fairway bunker. Golf bunkers can vary in depth, shape and size. On some golf courses, the golf bunkers are so deep that a ladder is needed to get in.
