The winner of the 1961 Australian Amateur Championship, Thomas L. Crow, wanted to turn his passion for golf into club making, and so he began customizing individual clubs according to American preferences. With $150,000 in start-up capital, Crow founded his custom-made golf club company in 1973.Golf clubsHe also designed the wooden racket that later became known as the "Baffler." Even today, Cobra's hybrid rackets bear the name Baffler.
In 1978, the company was transformed into Cobra Golf Inc., and Crow brought on a partner named Gary Biszantz. Cobra's first product, the Baffler, was launched in 1980 and sold for $4.5 million in 1985. Cobra was also among the first to incorporate graphite shafts in all its club lines, from irons to woods. Cobra's most profitable product line, the King Cobra, inspired by Big Bertha, was introduced to golfers in the mid-1990s. In September 1993, Cobra sold $38.5 million worth of shares on the stock market to launch the King Cobra series for women and seniors.

Perhaps the most famous ambassador for Cobra Golf to date was the Australian Greg Norman. In 1995, American Brands Inc., a conglomerate based in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, acquired Cobra Golf Inc. This conglomerate also includes companies such as Jim Beam, Master Locks, and Benson & Hedges. In addition to Cobra Golf, the group also acquired...golf shoes-Manufacturer Foot-Joy and the golf ball company Titleist. Today, the company's golf division is consolidated under the name Acushnet. Since 2010, Cobra has no longer been part of the Acushnet group but is a brand of the sporting goods manufacturer Puma from Herzogenaurach.
