The player who achieves the best net score on a hole alone is "on the pole". However, a point is only awarded to the person who is already "on the pole" and plays another single best net hole. After receiving a point, you remain on the pole until someone else plays a single best net score on a hole. Only one player at a time can remain on the pole. The winner is ultimately the player with the most points. As already mentioned, these can only be achieved while "sitting on the pole".
