A game consists of one party playing against another party over the set round, unless otherwise determined by the game management.
In hole play, the game is played hole by hole.
Unless otherwise specified in the rules, a hole is won by the party who holes their ball with fewer strokes. In the handicap game, the lower net score wins the hole.
The score of the hole play is expressed by the terms "so many holes up", "all square" and "so many holes to play".
A party is "dormie" if it is up for as many holes as there are holes left to play.
