If a ball marker or ball is moved during remeasurement while a rule is being applied or the application of a rule is being determined, the ball or ball marker must be put back. There is no penalty in this case, provided that the movement of the ball or ball marker is directly attributable to the actual act of remeasuring. Otherwise, Rules 18-2a, 18-3b or 18-4 apply.
*PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULES:
Hole play - Hole loss; Counting play - Two strokes.
*If a player fails to put a ball back when he is obliged to do so, or takes a stroke after a ball has been put back under Rule 18 when such putting was not permitted, he incurs the basic penalty for breach of Rule 18 but no further penalty under this Rule.
Note 1: If a ball that must be returned under this rule is not immediately recoverable, it may be replaced by another ball.
Note 2: If the original position of a ball to be put back or returned has been changed, see Law 20-3b.
Note 3: If it is not possible to determine the position to which a ball is to be returned, see Law 20-3c.
